Fitness Duels: 1-on-1 Workout Challenges With Friends

A friend just posted an 8.4 km run. You think you could beat it. In Sweats, that thought takes two taps to turn into a real race: hit Beat this on their post, pick how long you have, and it becomes a private 1-on-1 duel. The app picks a fair metric, counts your workouts automatically, and tells you the moment the lead changes.

Duels are free and unlimited. You don’t need a group, a spreadsheet or a plan — just one friend and one number to beat.

Challenge a friend to your first duel today.

How a fitness duel works

  1. Find a workout to beat. Every activity post in your feed has a Beat this button: runs, rides, walks, swims or gym sessions.
  2. Pick your time window. A few hours if you can go right now, or until tomorrow if you can’t.
  3. Sweats picks a fair metric. Distance, steps, workout minutes or calories, depending on what the original workout measured best. You can’t change the terms once the duel starts.
  4. Train as usual. Workouts you record in Sweats, plus steps and activity from Apple Health on iPhone, count on their own. There’s nothing to log by hand.
  5. First to the number wins. If neither of you gets there, whoever is ahead when time runs out wins. The winner gets a share card.

Why a 1-on-1 challenge works better than a group one

Big group challenges tend to lose steam. A few people pull ahead, everyone else stops checking the leaderboard, and by the second week it’s quiet. We wrote about that pattern in why most group fitness challenges fail by day 3.

A duel avoids that pattern for three reasons:

  • You’re racing a person, not a goal. It’s easy to let yourself off a goal. It’s much harder to lose to a friend who will see the result.
  • The stakes are small and they reset. Losing a duel costs you one round, not a 40-day streak. You can start another one straight away, which is why people keep playing. (More on that in the case for duels.)
  • It’s private. Only the two of you can see a duel, so there’s no public record of losses to put people off trying.

What counts toward a duel

Every duel is measured on one of four metrics: distance, steps, workout minutes or calories. Sweats picks the one that makes sense for the workout you’re racing, so a runner and a lifter are never scored on a metric that only suits one of them.

GPS workouts you record in Sweats count directly, and Sweats also reads steps and workouts from Apple Health on iPhone. The number comes from the tracking, not from anyone typing it in, so nobody has to trust anyone else’s maths.

Updates while the duel is on

Sweats notifies you when the lead changes and when time is nearly up. If you use the AI coach, it can also message you about the gap, for example: “You’re 1,400 steps behind with 3 hours left. A short walk closes it.” You get one clear next step instead of a general reminder. See how the AI coach works.

Duels, weekly leagues and challenges

Duels are one of three competitive features in Sweats, and they all share the same recorded activity:

  • Duels: short, private, one person against one person.
  • Weekly leagues: every activity earns Health Points toward a league table. The top 20% move up a tier every Monday, from Bronze to Diamond. How weekly leagues work.
  • Challenges: set a step, distance, minutes or calorie goal for a group of friends or your whole tribe, and the leaderboard fills in from recorded activity.

One workout counts toward all three at once. Save it, and it’s added to your duel, your challenges and this week’s league table.

Ideas for your first duel

  • The lunch-break steps duel. Race a coworker to their morning step count before the end of the day.
  • The weekend long run. Your friend posted a 10 km Saturday run. Give yourself until Sunday night to match the distance.
  • The minutes duel. Great for mixed training. Yoga, strength and cycling all count on workout minutes.
  • The rematch. Lost last time? Hit Beat this on their next post.

Fitness duel FAQ

Are duels free?

Yes. Duels are free and unlimited, and they don’t count against the free plan’s limit on active challenges.

Who can see my duels?

Only you and the person you’re dueling. Duels are private head-to-heads and don’t appear on public leaderboards.

What happens if neither of us reaches the target?

Whoever is ahead when the time window ends wins the duel.

Can I duel someone who does a different sport?

Yes. Sweats picks the fairest metric for the workout you’re racing (distance, steps, workout minutes or calories), so mixed-sport duels still work.

Which phones does Sweats work on?

Sweats is on the App Store for iPhone now and reads activity from Apple Health. The Google Play version is coming soon.
